Ecosystem services are benefits to humans provided by ecosystem functions in the form of goods and services. For example, provision of clean water and animal life, coastal stabilization or preservation of iconic landscapes are some of the ecosystem services with a positive influence on the human society. Compared to ecosystem functions, ecosystem services can be given a monetary value, as they provide sustenance, support and benefits to people. Direct or indirect interactions between the ecosystem and people determine these values (Miller, 2002).

These services can be divided in four groups (anon., 2006):

  • Provisioning services, such as food, water, timber;
  • Regulating services, such as regulation of climate, flooding events, waste products;
  • Cultural services, such as recreation, aesthetical benefits;
  • Support services, such as soil formation, photosynthesis and nutrient cycling.
