Activity

Pertains to the processes within an ecosystem, such as primary production, decomposition, nutrient cycling, etc and emergent properties, that result for species interactions and the complex interactions between biotic and abiotic components of the ecosystem. De Groot (2002 and references therein) defines ecosystem functions as ‘the capacity of natural processes and components to provide goods and services that satisfy human needs, directly or indirectly’ . De Groot groups ecosystem functions in four primary categories: (1) regulation functions; (2) habitat functions; (3) production functions and (4) information functions. An example of a regulation function is disturbance prevention. The corresponding ecosystem service could then be e.g. storm protection or flood protection, and the underlying processes and components are the influences of ecosystem structures on wave attenuation and/or dissipation, and sediment retention.
