In order to reach a new morphodynamic equilibrium, any significant change in hydraulic conditions has to result in a proportional adaptation in channel cross section, for example, erosion after a tidal volume increase and sedimentation after a decrease (Louters et al., 1998). Considering the reduction of the tidal volume and current velocities more sedimentation in the channels is expected. This process of sedimentation will continue until the current velocities are in equilibrium again with the local geometry. It is estimated that an amount between 400 to 600 million m3 sand is needed to restore the morphodynamic equilibrium in the Eastern Scheldt.
