Coastal zones and estuaries are one of the most productive ecosystems in the world, and rocky shores serve as habitat, nursery and foraging grounds for fish, crustaceans, algae, various shellfish and other organisms consumed by people. They also provision marine organisms that can be used as feed for domesticated animals. Approximately 50% of the world’s fish catches are made around coastal zones, but they are also the most influenced by anthropogenic activities. As rocky shores are able to sustain and replenish various nearshore aquatic organism populations, it is crucial to ensure their protection with the creation of protected coastal zones with only limited human activity allowed in them (anon., 2006).
