Activity

The diversity of genetic resources is important for maintaining the resilience of the ecosystem, ocean areas are inter-connected which allows exchange of organisms and genetic information. Coastal regions are more biologically diverse than open water, as they provide various habitats and nursery areas, and a wide range of producers, such as eelgrass or kelp. Most of commercial fishing activities occur in or near the coastal zone, therefore protecting the diversity of coastal ecosystems is also important for the well-being of humans. Furthermore, coastal biodiversity is endangered by land-based pollution, eutrophication, overfishing, climate change and invasive species (anon., 2010; Miller, 2002).
