Activity

Birds were counted in March 2016. The following species were observed:

  • Common shellduck
  • Mallard
  • Wigeon
  • Eurasian curlew
  • Oystercatcher
  • Redshank
  • Little Egret
  • Black-headed gull
  • European herring gull
  • Great crested grebe
  • Great cormorant
Figure 1: Distribution and numbers observed at low tide for Common shellduck (left) and Eurasian curlew (right) in Perkpolder (March 2016) (Boersema et al. 2016).

Waders and the common shellduck typically forage on the tidal flat. Ducks like mallard and wigeon mainly occur in the creeks or resting along the creek banks. Figure 1 shows the distribution for two species, the common shellduck and the Eurasian curlew.

Conclusion

As with the colonization of the benthic macrofauna into the Perkpolder area, also estuarine birds returned. Waders like Eurasian curlew and oystercatcher, and the common shellduck are foraging during low tide in the intertidal zone, while the creeks are used by ducks such as mallard and wigeon. Little egrets look for small fish and crustaceans in the creeks.
