Activity
Rocky shores are used as mating grounds and nursery areas by a large variety of marine and terrestrial species, such as seals, fish or birds. Various sessile organisms found on rocky shores can also serve a similar function, as for instance, upper canopies of kelp typically found in the subtidal zone of rocky coasts (and the hard substrate they have attached to) serve as a nursery for various rockfish and other fish species, and invertebrates, for example, one of the most abundant fish species in the Atlantic ocean: Atlantic herring Clupea harengus, favor using sublittoral rocks and attached vegetation for spawning purposes (anon., 2006; anon., 2010).
