Nearshore ecosystems create opportunities to gain knowledge of natural systems and their historical evolution. Furthermore, research on natural products created by marine organisms has been used to synthesize various valuable substances, such as water resistant glues, antifouling paints and antibiotics. For instance, cytotoxins formed by sponges, sea mosses (various macro algae species), jellyfish and starfish, are used in pharmaceutical industry to create anti-cancer drugs (anon., 2006).
