Pits and crevices on rocky shores provide important refuge and attachment places for coastal organisms, as they protect them from wave exposure, currents and predators, that are too large to reach into these surface irregularities. These surface irregularities create microhabitats with an altered flow regime that can serve as a place of settlement for species usually found in much calmer waters. On exposed shores, small crevices facilitate many snail species, increasing the overall biodiversity of the coast, as they would not be able to cling to the rocks during periods of heavy wave action, therefore they retreat to these places when necessary (Little et al., 2010). Furthermore, while subtidal red algae found on exposed shores have a smaller and streamlined shape, individuals of the same species growing in pits and crevices on the same locations tend to have larger and more complex forms (Ferrier and Carpenter, 2009).
